Proud owner of the Garmin Nuvi 1450
I Have been a Garmin owner for about 6 years there was no uncertainty what brand name I was going to purchase, my previous Garmin served me fine but it was time for the new Garmin Nuvi 1450 and the wide screen was the main feature I wanted in my new one.
The screen is striking on the Garmin Nuvi 1450, while going from 4.3″ to 5″ does not sound like a great deal it is really amazing how much more map and information operates with ease. The screen anti-glare, and very vivid if you want it be, I have the brightness at 70% and that works great even in bright light. The images are crisp and clear, street names and such are auto-sized to not block the map but large enough to read without difficulty. The volume giving out direction is also exceptional, so loud I have it also on 70%. So a solid 5 Stars on the volume and screen quality, also the pronunciation of the directions!
The update procedure on the Garmin nuvi 1450 is very simple but lengthy, to be expected long on a slower PC and/or slow internet connection, the map data is enormous. That said Garmin makes it as painless as possible, the registration and update procedure was very polished.
when updated it is time to go through the options, which is optional, out of the box it picks everything, but I think it is worth picking your own, there are a lot of options. Out of the box the Garmin nuvi 1450 has every option turned on which Iis understandable but this is why I say it is worth getting all the setting customized to your preferences. One of my favourite options is the fact you can pick what tabs you want showing.
Quirk: If you are using the traffic information and have the traffic avoidance enabled you can get some really unusual routes, since I was just testing mine out in my home town going to work and other familiar places: I knew it was telling me wrong turns, I thin found out why in the manual, it was automatically changing the route around traffic alerts, this might sound like a positive thing and would be if it told you it was doing that, but in my situation it wasn’t. I then found you can have the best of both worlds, keep traffic info turned on but disable traffic in the avoidance’s setting tab. Now it warns you of traffic on your route, lets you see where, and gives you a detour alternative at that point you can take it or ignore. It would be better during the route calc process if it said it had optional detours. This is a 4 star quality in the auto mode. 5 star would be to tell you and offer yes or no detour selections for each point.
Junction View on the Garmin Nuvi 1450 to me was one of the most extraordinary features, I go through one difficult set of interchanges for 3 freeways with express lanes to by pass interchanges and local lane to pick up any direction to or from any free way, many people have taken the wrong road… When I approaching this the garmin Nuvi 1450 switched to junction view and wow, it had a clear labelled route through the mess, and pin pointed every lane without error, and the most advantageous lane for the up coming turn if there was more lane choices. A 5 star quality… My other Garmin wouldn’t have made it this easy
Another nice feature on the garmin nuvi 1450 is that it shows what your speed is along with what the speed limit is for that area, if you are speeding it turns red, which is cool. 5 Star, speed.
Also impressive is that I could pick max map detail and it keeps up even in the larger cities, unlike my previous Garmin, it would only show partial map and was slow. This is 5 star all the way for the Garmin nuvi 1450.
Overall I have to say I am happy with the Garmin 1450, I could not give it a full 5 for all things because it fell just a little short on a few things, but if I was to make the decision on a model again with what I know, I would purchase the garmin nuvi 1450 again, It is hard to beat.
